Industrial

The Roots

Throbbing Gristle
The people that coined the term Industrial with the phrase "Industrial music for industrial people." A 1970's band whose songs ranged from disco hits to almost unlistenable noise. As much performace art as music, this is a band that has inspired the Industrial scene the same way the Sex Pistols inspired the punk scene. When they split up, members went on to from three other popular and influential bands, Psychic TV, Coil, and Chris & Cosey.

Enstruzende Nuebauten
The archetypical industrial band whose first list of instruments on their first albums included power tools and pieces of metal.

Psychic TV
Formed by Genisis P'Orridge and Peter Christopherson formerly of Throbbing Gristle, this band has cult status. Especially since they actually did have their own cult, Thee Temple ov Psychic Youth. Like the founders previous band, this one hit the entire musical range from recordings of odd noises to Rolling Stones covers, sometimes even scoring a hit on the British pop charts. Said to have recorded everything they've ever done, every show, every proctice session, every time band members had sex, it's not surprising that they held the world record for most albums released. This was exemplified by the series of 23 albums that they released on the 23rd of each month for 23 months in a row.
